is it spam, or a crapflood?

more than a fusion of the two?

arrgh. i'm thinking about restricting comments to registered users. i hate that shit; anonymity is a beautiful thing, and i'm not happy when i've got to get an account somewhere just to leave a comment. no good deed goes unpunished, and all that. still, i'm now getting about 20 posts a day spamming for online poker sites. cleaning up the four or five spam an hour i get with email is tedious enough. (and filtering is lame; i still have to check every bit of email for false positives. easier to just delete it.)

i could ban ip addresses of the blog-spammers. i could fight the ocean, too. i sometimes try to track down some of the phishing links just to see how clever they are at the scam, but most of them are gone almost as soon as i get the email.

perl script, maybe. gawd. that'd be a fun day. and then i have to check my own false positives in addition to all the coding.

any ideas?

update: after looking around for a while, i found a couple projects on freshmeat. one's a proof-of-concept java library (for hibernate) for interacting with the movable type database (thanks, no), and the other's a perl command line front-end to the blog. that one actually looks pretty keen if you like that sort of thing.

blog anti-spam tool could be a good first php project...

or i could just install mt-blacklist. it looks pretty cool. w00t! more beta software!

ok; installed mt-blacklist. not too bad to install if you like manually setting file permissions on the server. we'll see how it goes....

this is for the record. if you're reading this far, you must be interested enough. mt-blacklist update: ~22 hours: 5 of 5 casino comment-spam blocked. false positives: 0. awesome! i'm not the only one! and nice fscking work! if it continues to work perfectly, i'm sold.

mt-dsbl: should i install that, too? is he even connecting to a real proxy-polis?

who else uses movable type? it seems everyone but m & s are on hosted servers.

and here's a solid dicussion of the whole thing.

ok; that's enough. i just saw the 't'pol in heat' episode, so i feel compelled to up more vulcan pr0n, but after that the whole adolescent nerdcore shit is over. i promise. i'm promising myself.
